Hello Raiders,
The first snow or winter weather event always seems to stir up the excitement that school may be cancelled. We pride ourselves on student safety; however, that has to be balanced with the fact that we live in central Illinois, and it does snow and get cold in the winter months.
As I’ve mentioned in the past, I try make decisions on weather events based upon whether I’d want my own children driving or attending school on those days. I also personally drive roads in our district to make my decisions. With our district residing in two different counties, it’s important to understand that one county may plow roads in time for school while another may choose to wait. All these factors go into making the best decision possible for students and staff. Granted it’s never perfect.
In general, if I can’t drive a small call on the roads we’re going to cancel. It’s important to remember that snow is much easier to deal with than ice. Our buses cannot operate safely on ice, but they do fine in minimal snow. The other factor to consider is how cold it is outside.
Finally, if we do need to cancel school, I will send out a call/text message. If you’ve not been getting our messages, please make sure your phone number is correct in TeacherEase or call our offices to confirm. We’ll post on our Facebook pages and do our best to contact local television stations as well. Because our buses start early, we will always aspire to cancel before 5:30 AM.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to navigate the Illinois winter weather. As the saying goes…if you don’t like the weather today…wait until tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Todd Hellrigel
