Mrs. Harbourn took 29 MCHS students to the Tazewell Teen Conference at Illinois Central College. This conference is sponsored by the Tazewell County Health Department, Tazewell County Youth Board, Tazewell County Schools, Tazewell Teen Initiative, AAA Chicago, and The Community Foundation of Central Illinois. Over 200 students from 20 surrounding schools attended this conference. Our students were able to attend two professional workshops (according to their interest) and connect with other students in the area. After their workshops and lunch, we were excited to listen to the keynote speaker, Jim Love, talk about the next level of student leadership while being authentically yourself. Jim shared personal stories with high energy, and motivated our students to be authentic, confident, and servant leaders. It was a great day for our Raiders!!

Taylor Baughman, a senior at Midwest Central High School, has been selected by the faculty and staff as the Student of the Month in CARY (Careers for America's Rural Youth). Taylor is the daughter of Tisha Baughman of Manito and AJ and Kellsie Baughman of Canton. During high school, Taylor has been involved in Science Club and CARY. She has also worked at Manito Subway for three years. After graduating, Taylor plans to attend ICC for two years to obtain her RN. She will then transfer to OSF to obtain her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Eventually Taylor would like to become a travel nurse. Taylor would like to personally thank the Midwest Central School District staff for this opportunity.

Hello Raiders, The first snow or winter weather event always seems to stir up the excitement that school may be cancelled. We pride ourselves on student safety; however, that has to be balanced with the fact that we live in central Illinois, and it does snow and get cold in the winter months. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I try make decisions on weather events based upon whether I’d want my own children driving or attending school on those days. I also personally drive roads in our district to make my decisions. With our district residing in two different counties, it’s important to understand that one county may plow roads in time for school while another may choose to wait. All these factors go into making the best decision possible for students and staff. Granted it’s never perfect. In general, if I can’t drive a small call on the roads we’re going to cancel. It’s important to remember that snow is much easier to deal with than ice. Our buses cannot operate safely on ice, but they do fine in minimal snow. The other factor to consider is how cold it is outside. Finally, if we do need to cancel school, I will send out a call/text message. If you’ve not been getting our messages, please make sure your phone number is correct in TeacherEase or call our offices to confirm. We’ll post on our Facebook pages and do our best to contact local television stations as well. Because our buses start early, we will always aspire to cancel before 5:30 AM. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to navigate the Illinois winter weather. As the saying goes…if you don’t like the weather today…wait until tomorrow. Sincerely, Todd Hellrigel

Mrs. DeSutter's Physics class ended their unit on projectile motion with a lab practical called "Mouse Trap/ Marshmallow Projectiles." Students modified a mouse trap with limited resources (straws, popsicle sticks, tape, etc) to project a marshmallow. Josh won for furthest distance - 6.1 meters.
