FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT
Art Instructor: Mr. Ed Douglas
All art classes at MCHS are electives; none have prerequisites, so they may be taken in any order. The courses offered are:
Drawing: We concentrate on learning to “draw what you see,” including basic geometric forms, linear perspective, and drawing various subjects from still life to human faces. We try out various media: pencil, charcoal, ink, scratchboard, and felt-tip marker. We connect drawing to art history by studying the lives and works of artists who were famous for their ability to draw.
Painting: We learn color theory and experience various media: water-color, tempera, and acrylic paint. Like the drawing class we do more painting “what you see” than painting from memory. Each student does a research project on a famous painter and presents a visual report to the class.
Sculpture/3-D Design: In this course we do modeling with clay, ceramic pottery, construction in plaster, carving, creating molds, and assemblages. We study basic architectural styles and do a research project on a famous sculptor or architect.
Printmaking/2-D Design: This course concentrates on the 2-dimensional media not covered in the drawing and painting classes, with the emphasis on printmaking, specifically linoleum block printing and serigraphy.
Jewelry/Crafts: Almost any craft is fair game for this course, and it varies from one semester to the next. One can expect to do “hobby ceramics,” pottery, simulated stained glass, various fabric and string crafts, beadcraft, metal jewelry, and mosaic.
Graphic Design: Since graphic design is “design for publication,” we work on a variety of projects, from designing advertising and packaging to page-layouts. This class does the school’s “artlitmag” (art/literary magazine) as one of its major projects.
Photography: Our emphasis is more on traditional film-based photography, but we touch on digital. We learn how to operate a camera, develop b&w film, and make prints. We have a black-and-white darkroom for that purpose. We study exposure, composition, history of photography, and learn about the various styles and types of photography and special problems in photography.
