Midwest Central High School – CARY Program
Midwest Central High School has been selected to take part
in a new grant funded program called Careers for America’s Rural Youth or CARY.
The CARY program is designed to give students the chance to explore a wide range
of career options and to gain skills and knowledge that are vital to success in
the workplace and in life.
Students who participate in the program will enroll in a
daily careers class. The class will cover a wide variety of topics including:
- Career Counseling – finding out your occupational
interests & abilities
- Career Assessment and Planning – goal setting related to
future occupations and education
- Developing a Career Portfolio – learning to write a
resume, interview techniques, using the telephone to arrange an interview,
filling out job applications
- Life Skills Training – time management, budgeting,
balancing a checking account and other financial necessities
- Social Awareness – positive attitude, learning
appropriate social skills for school and the workplace, workplace ethics,
illegal drugs and the workplace
- Job Seeking and Job Keeping Skills – interview
techniques, appropriate dress, employer expectations, being a responsible and
dependable employee
- Completing College Applications and Financial Assistance
Forms
This program will include a great deal of “hands on
learning” and practical experiences. Students will have the opportunity to
participate in field trips and see a variety of careers in action. Community
service and leadership opportunities will be a part of the curriculum and many
students will be eligible to participate in a summer work experience program.
