Guidelines for Parents of Underachieving Children

  • Homework--research shows that successful students spend about 10 hours each week on homework.
  • Talk with teachers on a regular basis.  Don't wait until progress reports.  Have a weekly progress report sent home.
  • Setup a regular time and place for students to do homework.  If there isn't any homework do something education like reading a book.
  • Find a fun hook that is not directly school-related to get kids interested in learning.  For older students it might be a volunteer in a field of interest or finding a mentor for the student.
  • Don't always bail out the student.  Let the student suffer the consequences for failure to follow through.
  • Be consistent in enforcing rules about school work.
  • Have the student use a daily planner to write down homework, test dates and projects.
  • Don't accept the child's word if they say they have finished.  Check it with their planner.
  • Track long-term assignments on a calendar.
  • Take control of the number of extracurricular activities the students gets involved with.
  • Don't compare your child to others.
  • Stay calm and in control when applying consequences.
  • Find tutoring help
